A wide view of a baseball stadium during a game at dusk, seen from high in the stands behind home plate. The field is brightly lit and surrounded by a large crowd. Dark, dramatic storm clouds hang over the stadium, while a break in the clouds reveals a glowing orange and pink sunset above the distant mountains. A large scoreboard in center field displays colorful graphics, creating a striking contrast between the illuminated ballpark and the stormy sky.

Summer Weekend Activities In & Around Denver

Written by:

One of the many things that I love about my new life in Denver is that there is never a shortage of things to do. And now that summer is here, there’s even more exciting stuff going on around the city. So, here are some of my favorite activities that I’ve discovered so far this summer.

Bear Creek Lake

For being only a 20 minute drive from downtown Denver, Bear Creek Lake is a pretty insane oasis that offers the perfect escape from city life (if that’s what you’re looking for). I haven’t been able to get the beauty of it out of my head since I went, and it’s the perfect spot to bring friends and hang out for a day in the sun. Bring a cooler, bring snacks, bring your dog, bring a paddle board if you have it, and prepare to never want to leave.

I also recommend you hang out on the south side of the lake, since it’s away from the main beach and the crowd is more mature.

Espresso Sessions

Espresso Sessions is a new morning party concept with DJs, coffee and local vendors and it’s a great way to start a Saturday or Sunday. As a house music and coffee lover, this was the perfect spot to hang out and meet people with similar interests, especially as someone that’s new to the Denver area.

Espresso Sessions are a bit rarer than most of the options on this list, with maybe one event per month, but it seems to be ramping up for more frequent events in the future, especially in the summer.

Farmers Markets

Cherry Creek Farmers Market

Walking around the Cherry Creek Farmers Market is a great way to kick off a weekend morning. It’s Denver’s largest farmers market, with tons of unique small businesses and lots to explore. The vibes are always high, the vendors are super nice, and the weather is usually perfect. And, if you time it just right, you can walk from here to the next Espresso Sessions.

Highlands Farmers Market

The Highlands Farmers Market takes place every Sunday throughout the summer in the nice and peaceful part of the Highlands neighborhood on 32nd Ave between Julian and Newton. It’s an awesome way to support small local businesses as well as pet some adorable dogs and maybe even meet new friends.

Hike

There are plenty of hiking trails in and around Denver, most notably along the river and waterways. And, with the foothills only 20-25 minutes away, there are a vast array of hiking trails within a short driving distance.

My favorite trails that I’ve found within this distance from Denver so far have been Morrison Slide Loop in Morrison and Mt. Galbraith via Cedar Gulch Trail in Golden.

The views atop Mt. Galbraith.

Rockies Game

Despite the Colorado Rockies’ rather abysmal reputation, it’s still fun to get some cheap tickets and hang out with friends at a ball game. If you do it right, you can get into the game for less than $20 and spend the rest of the money that you would’ve spent on the ticket at other baseball games on beer and hot dogs.

And, if you catch a seat in the nosebleeds on the southeast side of the stadium, you’ll get a pretty insane view of the sunset over the mountains to go with your hot dog and beer.
