Although I’m not a St. Louis native, having spent almost five years in the area has allowed me to explore the city’s coffee scene. There are some pretty great places for coffee lovers here, and here is a list of the best spots I’ve found.
To be completely honest, I’m not even sure what municipalities are considered St. Louis, so I’ve just listed all of the great coffee shops I’ve been to in the general area that most people (I think) consider St. Louis. Personally, I’ve spent most of my time west of the city (mainly St. Charles), so I’ve included some spots in that area as well in case you’re interested in venturing further out from the city.
Blueprint Coffee
According to their website they have four separate locations, but in my opinion they all seem like their own standalone coffee shops. I’ve been to the ones on Washington Blvd and in the Delmar Loop, and both have great atmospheres and great coffee. The one in the Delmar Loop seems a bit more like a student coffee shop than the Washington Blvd location, so keep that in mind.
Personally, I prefer the Washington Blvd location because there are lots of windows so you get a ton of natural sunlight inside, as well as there are always different art exhibitions in the back rooms that showcase local St. Louis artists. My only complaints are that if you go in the afternoon the coffee shop faces the west, so if there aren’t any clouds that day then there’s a good chance you’ll be blinded by the sun, and that there’s limited seating. So if you go in the afternoon and it’s busy, you just might be stuck getting absolutely rail gunned by the sun for however long you sit there.
Coma Coffee
Coma Coffee is a nice place at the bottom of a tall business building in Brentwood with great coffee and lots of space. It’s two stories with plenty of seating, and large tables if you need to spread out. They’re also usually open until 7pm, so their hours are great if you need lots of time to sit and work.
Comet Coffee
A warm and cozy coffee shop, this place has great coffee and (allegedly) great pastries. I really love this place, but it’s unfortunate that it closes at 2pm every day. It’s also in the middle of a business park and parking is a pain in the butt (or at least it was for me), otherwise I would go there more often. Aside from all that, the interior is super nice with lots of plants and warm decorations.
Omen Coffee
Omen is an amazing coffee spot right down the street from Blueprint on Washington Blvd, and it’s one of my favorite places on this list. The coffee is delicious, the interior is great and the staff is super friendly. There’s also lots of seating so no matter how busy it gets you should always be able to find a place to sit.
I recommend getting the “Cema Special”, I believe it’s a latte with vanilla and caramel or something, but regardless it’s delicious.
23 West Coffee
A cozy coffee shop in Webster Groves, the coffee doesn’t really get better than it is at 23 West. You can tell that they truly care about the quality of their coffee, and it’s in a great area. Absolutely no complaints, and I highly recommend you give this place a shot.
St. Charles
Crooked tree Coffee Shop
The Crooked Tree is probably the most popular coffee shop in St. Charles. Its coffee is great, and the warm interior makes for a nice spot to sit and study or get some work done. They are also open pretty late, so you can stay for just about as long as you want.
Also, every single food item on the menu is delicious. I recommend the Aubracado or the Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich.
Mocha Point Coffee
This is a pretty new Yemeni coffee shop on north Main Street and, unless you’ve tried Yemeni coffee, it’s an interesting change. For those who are like me and hadn’t tried it before going, you’ll be surprised at how different it tastes from our normal coffee around here. You’ll have to decide whether you like it or not on your own.
Otherwise, it’s in an amazing location with great hours and friendly staff, and I’m sure it’ll be great to sit outside here in the summertime.
Upshot Coffee
Styled like a mechanic’s garage, this is a nice spot with lots of character and delicious coffee. One wall consists of garage doors that they open in the summer to let the fresh air in, and everything is motorhead themed. The only thing is that in the winter the garage doors don’t provide much insulation, so dress warm. Other than that, everything is great.
Also, the food is delicious. I’ve had the avocado toast and the Brake Shop Burrito, and they’re absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend.
Regardless of what you choose, these are all great options. Let me know if you have any other recommendations that you think I should check out, and I’ll try to update this list as I find new ones.
Enjoy!
