We passed through Georgetown, Colorado a couple weeks ago on our way back from Copper Mountain, and I’m so glad we stopped. It’s a tiny mountain town right off of I-70, with 150-year-old buildings and an adorable main street filled with small shops and boutiques. If you’re on your way to or from the ski slopes and have the time to stop, I highly recommend it.
Georgetown is a former mining town that was founded in the 1850s-60s, and if you take a walk down their historic main street it literally feels like a time machine. Most of the storefronts are still intact from when they were first built, which must’ve been over a hundred years ago. There are some new developments on the north side of town stretching to the lake, but the main street area is where you want to be.

When you do end up on main street, I highly recommend stopping by Nara Visa Coffee. It’s an adorable coffee shop filled with friendly workers and great coffee, and in my opinion it’s kind of the perfect example of a small mountain town coffee shop. And sometimes a good small town coffee shop is all you need, right?
Attached to Nara Visa Coffee is a nice little art exhibition with plenty of great prints and original works from local artists. Most of the artworks are paintings of mountains or famous views in Colorado, so if you need some art to put up in your home, this would be the perfect place to shop.
Walking up main street, you’ll find a bunch of small boutique shops with tons of old relics, usually run by old folk and interesting characters that have spent most of their lives in Georgetown. The far corner of the street hosts a really cool shop where they handmake their own soda like the old times from a variety of flavors, and it’s pretty tasty. If you’re on the road and looking for a refreshment, this would be the perfect place to go.
If you keep driving around town you’ll really get to see just how old the place is, as a lot of the buildings are over 100 years old. I’m sure there’s some sort of visitor’s center in town somewhere, but we didn’t get around to it. Maybe next time.
Georgetown, Colorado is a beautiful town and it’s definitely worth taking some time to explore. Seeing as how I-70 is often packed with an absurd amount of traffic, it wouldn’t hurt to take a break from the driving and show some love to this small mountain town.

I think I might make this into a series, as there are a ton of small towns in the U.S. (and really the whole world) that don’t get heard of enough. So, I suppose this may be the first of many.
Have a great week!
