Spring Break in Panama City Beach: What to Expect

Written by:

As a former college student that spent a spring break in Panama City Beach, Florida, I wanted to put down some of my experiences so those of you that are planning a trip will know what to expect. Keep in mind my experiences are based off of my trip back in 2023, so the prices might be a little lower than they are now, but the theory is the same.

These headings might make it seem a little off-putting, but I’m not trying to be discouraging at all. I had a great time during the week that I was there, and I’m sure you will too. Spending a week in a Floridian beach town with a great group of friends is one of life’s greatest gifts, where fond memories are made and lifelong friendships are cemented.

The Beach

The beach is the main thing that everyone goes to PCB for. Especially if you’re from landlocked midwestern states, you’re going to Panama City Beach to lay in the sand, drink your drink, and take a break from the bleak winter weather. The thing is, just about every college student in the Midwest is thinking the exact same thing. That means beaches packed with frat bros, lots of speakers blasting music, and very little peace and quiet. So, if peace and quiet is what you’re looking for, I suggest you find another stretch of beach to visit for spring break.

If partying is what you’re looking for, this is the place to be. I recommend you get to the beach early, bring drinks (in a water bottle or tumbler, they don’t allow open drinks on the beach), and prepare yourself for a bender. Don’t forget to bring water as well!

The Crowd

Panama City Beach is probably the number one spring break spot for college students nationwide; therefore, you can expect it to be pretty busy. That means crowded beaches, long lines, and packed bars. To counteract this, I recommend you book your place to stay at least a couple months before the trip and get any restaurant reservations as early as possible.

If you’re traveling with a big group, say 10 people or more, I recommend you split the group into two parts so it’s easier to make plans, arrange transportation, and overall provides a smoother spring break with (hopefully) less arguments.

The Prices

Especially if you’re a broke college student like I was, you’re going to want to save money for this trip. Alcohol is expensive, the bars are expensive, and restaurants will be expensive as well. If you’re looking to save money, I suggest you get groceries and cook meals wherever you’re staying so you aren’t spending $20-30/person when you eat out.

There are often people walking around the beach selling cards called something like “Maniac VIP Cards,” which, at least when I was there, are cards where after you pay a flat fee up front you don’t have to pay cover at any of the bars you go to. The card was $100, but if you’re planning on going out to the bars and clubs more than three times throughout the week, it’ll easily save you $30-40 or more seeing as the cover fees are usually around $40/person.

The Nightlife

The nightlife, other than the beach, is the main reason college students go to PCB for spring break. That means packed bars, pretty expensive drinks, and drunk people everywhere. Depending on the kind of person you are, you’ll either have a blast, or you’ll get sick of it pretty quick. Personally, I had a great time.

Aside from the usual bars and nightlife, there are often special events that some popular bars and venues put on during spring break such as foam parties and concerts that can be quite fun with a group of friends.
