Top Movies to Fuel Your Traveling Spirit

I watch a lot of movies, so I figured it might be helpful to make a list of the ones that make me yearn for the airport again. Maybe this weekend when you’re full from all of the Thanksgiving food you can turn on one of these movies and plan your next trip.

I made sure to focus only on the ones that make traveling attractive or capture the exciting spontaneity of what it’s like to travel abroad, instead of just movies in which the characters travel across long distances.

Before Sunrise

Before Sunrise is probably the most grounded and accurate depiction of what it’s like to be young and solo traveling through Europe as someone from the U.S. Ethan Hawke gives a spectacular performance as a young and guileless 20-something American man that meets a young woman in Vienna and decides to spend a day wandering the city with her.

It’s a beautiful movie that shows exactly how it feels to be young and impulsive while traveling, yet it also explores deeper philosophical subjects in the conversations that unfold. All that while seeing amazing shots of the incredible beauty of Vienna! What’s not to love?

Into The Wild

This movie tells the story of a young man that drops out of college, sells all of his belongings and journeys to Alaska to live off the land. It’s a beautiful movie showing the adventures and the dangers of nature, as well as the awe-inspiring beauty of North America. If you’ve ever thought about doing something like van life or going off the grid, I’d say this movie is for you.

My Dinner with Andre

This movie doesn’t actually show any traveling or adventure but rather talks about it. Two men sit down for dinner, one being a directionless New Yorker and the other being an enthusiastic and artistic old friend that just got back from his travels abroad. They talk about life, art, traveling and everything in between, and just the way that they talk about traveling will make you want to plan your next trip.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

A classic. Ben Stiller nails it as a middle-aged man that needs more in his life but doesn’t know how to start. Then, before he knows it, he’s flying to Greenland, longboarding around Iceland and hiking the Himalayas. It’s an incredibly wholesome movie, and it’s maybe the best film in terms of motivating you to travel. It’s full of crazy daydreams, scenic shots of landscapes, and inspiring adventures. Man, talking about it makes me want to rewatch it.

The Tree of Life

I’m not sure if this movie is for everyone, but I think it’s absolutely incredible. It doesn’t necessarily depict traveling, but it is loaded with scenic shots of nature and breathtaking views of our planet and its natural beauty. It’s truly some of the best wildlife/nature cinematography I’ve ever seen. I don’t know what it is, but it’s like I can reach out and touch the bark of the trees, feeling the texture on my fingers, and run my hands through the ocean waves. It makes me want to go to a national park.

Maybe you guys won’t like it as much as I do, but this movie blows my mind every time I watch it. It also doesn’t really depict any traveling, but I figured I’d put it on here regardless.
